The Glorious World Trump Empire
Even supposing that I (Alyssa) am personally completely safe - because the world is large, and there is probably somewhere to go - what should we do about how the entire world has been turned into the Glorious Eternal Empire Of Trump?
- The overwhelming majority of world GDP is concentrated in China, the United States, and Europe.
- China is already a fascist dictatorship, and the US and Europe are heading there very quickly.
- Even assuming some EU states remain democratic, the other states will have tons of leverage via economics, trade policy, and EU institutions to whack them over the head.
- Even if the US remains democratic, and Democrats retake power at some point, the obstacles in front of them are very formidable:
- Trump will, like most leaders of hybrid regimes, create policies which make it harder for Dems to campaign, gain support and win.
- The Senate, House, and Electoral College are all biased against Democrats, and the Senate extremely so.
- American conservatives greatly outnumber liberals. The only reason Dems can ever win is because lots of Black and Hispanic conservatives traditionally voted Dem, but this trend is now reversing (racial depolarization).
- The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative supermajority. Democrats would have to win the White House or Senate every election in a row for the next twenty years to take the Supreme Court.
- No other country comes remotely close to matching the US, China, and India's power in terms of sheer size, and the US and China's power in manufacturing and technological development. (<https://acoup.blog/2022/07/08/collections-is-the-united-states-exceptional/>)
- The relative power of countries changes extremely slowly, on a timescale of decades or centuries. Even if another country became a nicer place to live than the US, for it to not be tiny and irrelevant compared to the US and China would take multiple generations.
